CARTER RITES HELD SUNDAY

Pioneer Farmer Dies After Long Illness

Funeral services for Ed Carter, 81-year old pioneer farmer, were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Bramer's funeral parlor in charge of the Rev. E.W.F. Holler. Mrs. Ed Bartachek was at the organ. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery where Knights of Pythias conducted graveside rites. Pallbearers were Clyde Manatt, Gerald Manatt, Henry Van Renterghem, Arthur Kuntz, Orrie Neitzel and Henry Frus.

Mr. Carter died last Thursday at his home southwest of Brooklyn following a long illness. He had lived in Poweshiek county all of his life.

Hillary Edwin Carter, son of W.D. Carter and Alice Sackett Carter, was born Jan. 30, 1871 in Poweshiek county. He was married to Christena Smith of Hartwick, Jan. 1, 1900 and two sons were born to the couple, William Delmar and Carl Edwin, both of Brooklyn.

At the age of 21 he joined the Knights of Pythias lodge of Brooklyn where he was a member for over 60 years.

In addition to his wife and sons he is survived by five grandchildren, Norma Taghon of Montezuma and Richard, Robert, Thelma and Donna Carter of Brooklyn; one great granddaughter, Deborah Lynn Taghon; one sister, Mrs. Isora Johnson of Zenda, Kan.; one brother, Chester Carter of Wichita, Kan. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Lineweaver and Mrs. Nora Deerdorf and one brother, George Carter.
