MABEL E. PICKERING

Mabel E. Pickering, 81, of 505 Sixth Ave., Grinnell, died of a heart ailment Sunday, Dec. 31, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stanley Meade, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Richard Cox, Jeff Curtis, Marlin Galloway, Charles McDaniel, Denvil Oliver Jr., and Gene Oliver. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Guy Harvey and Bessie Winifred Mullins Curtis, she was born March 31, 1908, in Great Falls, Mont. The family lived in Clinton before moving to Grinnell in 1931.

She was married to Stanley Wilfong, Oct. 11, 1931, in Grinnell. The couple later were divorced.

She was married to Claude Pickering March 3, 1945, in Montezuma. They continued to live in Grinnell where Mrs. Pickering was a member of the Grinnell American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band.

She is survived by one son, Robert G. Wilfong of Montezuma; two brothers, Raymond W. Curtis of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Paul R. Curtis of Marshalltown; and a sister, Lois M. Emmert of Aurora, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; her parents; four sisters, Ruth Mattingly, Grace Woods, Wilma Deck and Doris Oliver; and one brother, Fay "Whitey" Curtis.
