LEROY METHELMAN

LeRoy J. Mithelman, 77, of 1527 Penrose St., Grinnell, died Friday, March 11, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Arvid Dixen officiating. Organist was Margaret Amo. Pallbearers were Ryan Fairchild, Lee Garrett, Jerry Holcomb Jr., Karl Lindblom, Kevin Lindblom, Christian Mithelman and Larry Mithelman. Honorary bearers were Brian Brown, Lyle Johnson, Loren Kolpin, Paul Pohlson, Rick Ramsey, John Ruchotzke, Paul Schalinske and Bill Weeks.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The son of Fred J. and Lena Lidtka Mithelman, he was born April 5, 1916, on the family farm near Malcom. He received his education at a country school in Sheridan Township and later attended high school in Malcom.

He was married to Dorothy Jones on Oct. 23, 1937, in Grinnell. Following her death in February 1940, he was married to Ruth Bryan March 1, 1941, in Grinnell.

Mr. Mithelman worked for the Morrison-Shults Glove Factory prior to World War II. He served during the war with a U.S. Army convalescent hospital unit. Following his discharge he started the L.J. Mithelman Construction Co. here. He retired in 1981 and worked part time for Ramsey-Week's property management division.

He was active in St. John's Lutheran Church and served on various church committees and building and remodeling projects.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth; three daughters, Janet Holcomb of Grinnell, Judy Lindblom of Marshalltown and Jane VanTomme of Grinnell; one son, Jack of Mayword, Minn.; a brother, Claire of Grinnell; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and a sister, Elsie Young.
