IN MEMORIAM.

Mrs. David Rowland died at her home in Victor on Thursday, June 14, 1900, aged sixty years. The funeral was held on Sunday following at ?? o'clock, the service being held at the home conducted by Rev. C.T. Zimmerman assisted by Rev. E. Kent. The text for the funeral discourse was taken from Psalms 8th chapt. and 4th verse. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Victor cemetery.

Eliza Virginia Spessard was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, June 18, 1840. There she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage to David Rowland in Maryland in 1859. Mr. and Mrs. Rowland came to Poweshiek county in 1872 and located on their farm in Warren township. There they lived until 1893 when the moved to Victor. For several years past she had suffered from heart trouble but had been in her usual health and had attended a picnic in the country. Returning home in the evening she, while in conversation with her husband, expired suddenly without giving any intimation of the near approach of the silent messenger. She leaves an aged mother and one sister, both of whom reside in Maryland. The members of the family present at the funeral were Mrs. A.W. Manatt of Brooklyn, Mrs. M.E. Condon, Mrs. H.H. Compton and Mrs. G.H. Doughty, all three of Cedar Rapids, Neb.; Mrs. Henry Grant of Iroquois, S.D. and Edna and Hattie. The two sons, Alva and Melvin have been in Alaska the past two years. One daughter, Mrs. S.R. Walters, died in Colorado in 1890. Mrs. Rowland was a kind and affectionate woman, a devoted wife and mother, esteemed by all who knew her. Her life was one worthy of imitation and the worthy daughters are monuments to her memory. She ever lived a consistent life and enjoyed the christian hope and in that faith she passed to her eternal rest.
