MR. FREEBORN SERVICES HELD

Cletus W. "Bud" Freeborn, 65, died Saturday evening, May 7, of an apparent heart attack. He was dead on arrival at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce E. Brooks, pastor of the Laurel United Methodist Church, and the Rev. William McAlpine, pastor of the Patron United Methodist Church, officiating. Music was provided by Kathleen Heffner, organist, and Ruth Ann Dayton, vocalist. Pallbearers were Larry Bryan, Jim Freeborn, Dan Malloy, Jim Niner, Tom Staecker and Mike Schmitz. Honorary bearers were Mike E. Buhrow, Marvin McMahon, Truman Rosedale, Alfred Runner, Vernon Sietmann and Larry Swift.

Burial was at Rose Hill Memorial Garden Cemetery, Marshalltown, with military rites conducted by members of the Harold McBroom American Legion Post No. 645 of Laurel.

The son of Everett and Zephyr Hudson Freeborn, he was born May 21, 1917, at Exline and spent his youth at Centerville and Montezuma. He attended Montezuma schools. He served as a petty officer with the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet in the Pacific area during World War II for four years. He was married to Stella Staecker on Dec. 22, 1943, at Montezuma.

Mr. Freeborn worked as an auto body repairman in Montezuma and for 30 years in the Laurel area. He was the current commander of the Harold McBroom American Legion Post and attended the Laurel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Stella; four children, Steven J. Freeborn of Lincoln, Neb., Stanley D. Freeborn of Laurel, Jeffrey L. Freeborn of Gilman and Sheila Russel of LeGrand; six grandchildren; his mother, Zephyr Freeborn of Montezuma; three brothers, Delmar of Chicago, Ill., Everett Jr. of Montezuma and Gene of Montezuma; and six sisters, Helen Harrington of Montezuma, Louise Kopfer of Denver, Colo., Betty Malloy of Montezuma, Maretta Sharer of Montezuma, Joan Davis of Denver and Gladys Kilmer of Morrison, Colo.
