FUNERAL IS HELD TODAY

Services For Mrs. Mary Sutherland, Victim of Accident Wednesday Evening

HER WHOLE LIFE WAS BUILT INTO GRINNELL

Was Daughter of Charles G. Carmichael, Prominent In Grinnell's Early History

Mary Carmichael was born in Muscatine, Iowa, January 11, 1862, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Carmichael. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Grinnell where Mr. Carmichael engaged in the grain business shipping the first carload of grain over the Rock Island to Chicago. He was the first Worshipful Master of Hermon lodge. He also served on the county board of supervisors and it was through his efforts that the land was purchased for the county home at Montezuma.

Mary Carmichael, or Mamie as she was known to her friends, was married to David Sutherland and shortly after they moved to Woonsocket, S.D., where they went to housekeeping. Following a few years they removed to Beatrice, Nebraska, where Mr. Sutherland founded a grocery store. In 1893 the Sutherlands moved to Lake Charles, La., and opened a store. Here Mr. Sutherland passed away in January 1896. The widow with her son, then six years old, came back to Grinnell with her aged mother and began life anew. Never accustomed to the hardships of life she went to work in the Morrison-Ricker glove factory and continued there until her son had completed his school work.

Her interests centered in her church, her son and his family. In later years she became interested in lodges and clubs. Throughout the years she was employed in the glove factory the only interests were her work, her son and church. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters and Searchlight club, in addition to her church affiliations.

It was her oft repeated request that when her time came the funeral should be held from the home, amid the surroundings which she had loved so well.

Mrs. Sutherland grew up with the town of Grinnell, saw it without sidewalks, with board walks, with cement walks, trails, dirt roads and finally the paving. She saw each school building improved and throughout all the years was ever hopeful that Grinnell would continue to grow and prosper.

She leaves besides her only son, David, editor of the Montezuma Republican, two grandchildren, Mary Jean and David Jr., a sister, Mrs. Frank L. Child, two nephews S.C. Rundell of Chicago and Mrs. Rebecca Rundell Shields of Bedford, Iowa, and their four children besides innumerable relatives and friends.

Pall Bearers were George Lewis, and F.P. Marvin who graduated with Mrs. Sutherland in the class of 1882, Grinnell High, and Mayor W.J. Nelson, life long friend of the family, Dr. J.L. Ravitts, C.K. Gunnar, and L.C. Miltenberger, members of the Donald E. Blakely post of Montezuma of which her son is post commander.

Two beautiful solos,"My Savior First of All," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," were sung by Mrs. Margery Bouma.

On account of its close connection for so many years with her son David, who grew to newspaper manhoood in the Herald office, the editors of this paper have a very personal feeling in writing of Mrs. Sutherland. They have known her as a woman of charm and refinement, actively interested in the best things and bound up in the happiness and success of her son and of her home. The Herald junior acknowledges with appreciation her gracious charm as a hostess in her own home. She was one of God's good women, and those who knew her will remember her fondly.
