FERNE L. SARVER

Ferne L. Sarver, 89, of Grinnell died March 17 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at First Friends Church, with the Rev. Tim Stewart of the First Baptist Church and Pastor Evelyn Larsen of First Friends officiating. Organist was Kathy McCune, and harpist was Jeannie Chenette.

Pallbearers were Christopher and Jonathan Larsen and Brent, Bryce, Matthew and Nicholas Sarver. Honorary bearers were Denise Harris, Tamara Terpstra, Laurie Larsen and Kathryn Sarver.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was the daughter of Bert C. and Amanda Jane Beery Hoskins and was born Dec. 6, 1909, in Shambaugh, Iowa. She attended Mt. Jay Rural School, Clarinda High School and Oskaloossa High School. After graduating, she studied for one year at John Fletcher College, University Park, and at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She was married to Gerald A. Sarver Aug. 28, 1933, and they lived in the Searsboro area. Her teaching career began at Mill Grove Rural School north of New Sharon, and she then taught at Searsboro Consolidated School for many years.

In 1964 she received her B.A. degree from William Penn College. She moved to Grinnell and taught in the Grinnell-Newburg School District until her retiremnt in 1971 after nearly 30 years in education.

She was a member of First Friends Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Willemsen of Grinnell;; two sons, Gerald of Hot Springs,. Ark., and Randall of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Wanda Larsen; four brothers; and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Friends Church, First Baptist Church or Grinnell Regional Hospice.
