Denver Ross Miles

Denver Ross Miles, 83, of Brooklyn died Dec. 10, 1999 at St Francis Manor in Grinnell.

His funeral was Dec. 13 at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn with Pastor Carol Wehr officiating.

Music was, "In The Garden," "Mansion Over The Hilltop" and "How Great Thou Art" with Terry Osbourne as soloist and Marilyn Kriegel, organist.

A Masonic service was conducted by Robert Willett and members of Corinthian Lodge No. 174.

Casket bearers were Gene Morgan, Ron Burger, Mark Hawkins, John LaKose, Manly Miles and Charles Hawkins.  Honorary casket bearers were Freeman Hall, Owen Wenger, Don Brannian, Wayne Shaull, Jerry DeGeeter and Robert Williams.

Flower attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wiley and Mr. And Mrs. Harold Hiner.

Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery where mourners sang, "Amazing Grace."

Mr. Miles was born June 13, 1916 in Cherry Box, Mo., the son of Marshall G. and Ada (Anthony) Miles.  He attended school in LaPlata, Mo.  Farm work took him to Iowa and on Oct. 7, 1939 he married Verna Marie Sackett in Brooklyn.

The couple farmed near Brooklyn for several years.  Then they moved into town and operated Miles Monument Company.  After selling the business to Watts Vault and Monument Company in Montezuma, Mr. Miles remained active as a sales associate with Watts.

For more than 28 years Mr. Miles spent winter months in Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

He served on the Brooklyn School Board from 1956 to 1960.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and he was a Mason and member of Corinthian Lodge No. 174 in Brooklyn.  While Living in Donna, Texas, he sang with the Redeemers Gospeleers.

Mr. Miles was proud of the monument business and took pride in his own workmanship.  He also loved to work on his two antique tractors, a 1932 B and a 1936 A John Deere.  After retiring, he learned to play cow pasture pool, a term to describe golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold Miles.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verna; one son and his wife, Dennis and Patricia of Norway, Iowa; one daughter and her husband, Judy and Lowell Hockett of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren, close friends, Robert and Denise Christian; two sisters, Ruby Arment and Margaret Stutsman, both of LaPlata; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, Dec. 13, at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn for Denver Ross Miles, 83, of Brooklyn, who died suddenly on Friday morning, Dec. 10, 1999, at St Francis Manor in Grinnell.  Pastor Carol Wehr officiated.

Music was by organist Marilyn Kriegal and soloist Terry Osbourne, with the selections, "In The Garden," "Mansion Over The Hilltop" and "How Great Thou Art."  The Masonic service was conducted by Robert Willett and members of Corinthian Lodge No. 174.
