RITES HELD FOR JOHN COLLUM ON WEDNESDAY

John E. Collum, 81, of 814 Summer St., Grinnell, died Saturday evening at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Harry Linnenbrink officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Daniel Collum, Thomas Collum, Lawrence Collum, Randy Collum, Larry Cox, and Shawn Collum. Honorary pallbearers were Denny Collum, James Collum, Bill Collum, Steve Collum, Mike Arment, Mike Collum, Chris Collum, Tim Collum, and David Collum.

The Scripture Sersvice was held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home. Graveside rites were conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Burial as in the Calvary section of Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Hewey and Emma O'Brien Collum, he was born Oct. 15, 1896, at Holbrook. He attended school in Brooklyn. On July 26, 1918, he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. New Jersey during World War I.

He was married to Sophia Louise Lohman at Victor on June 30, 1920. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Collum farmed near Victor and Brooklyn. In 1929, they moved to the Grinnell-Newburg area to farm moving to Grinnell in 1942. While living in Grinnell, Mr. Collum was employed by the city. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Ambrose, Bruce, Jack and Lawrence Collum and Mrs. Frank (Patricia) Kester, all of Grinnell; 24 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph Collum of Brooklyn, Dynice "Bud" Collum, of Grinnell, and Leonard Collum of California; and four sisters, Margaret Collum of Brooklyn, Mrs. Jean Nowotny of Victor, Mrs. Frances Moore of Iowa City, and Mrs. Mildred Kent of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Ronald Paul Kester, who died in 1954.
