SOPHIA COLLUM RITES TUESDAY

Sophia Louise Collum, 85, of 814 Summer St. died Friday evening, June 1, at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Mass of the Resurrrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Harry H. Linnenbrink officiating. Music will be provided by Mary Ellen Brock, organist, and the St. Mary's choir. Pallbearers will be Michael Arment, Daniel Collum, Larry Collum, Michael Collum, Shawn Collum and Tom Collum. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The Scripture Service and Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorials or masses may be made to St. Mary's Church.

The daughter of Herman and Johanna Smith Lohman, she was born on Jan. 30, 1899, at Millersburg and attended rural schools. She was married to John E. Collum at Victor on June 20, 1920, and the couple farmed near Victor and Brooklyn. They came to the Grinnell-Newburg area to farm in 1929. In 1942, they moved to Grinnell and she was employed at the former Three Elms restaurant. She was a member of St. Mary's, the church's Altar and Rosary Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Ambrose L. and Jack D. Collum, both of Grinnell, Lawrence F. Collum of Newton and Patricia Kester, also of Grinnell; 31 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Jenny Pirkle of Victor, Minnie Furney of Cedar Rapids, Lena Larkey of Topeka, Kan., and Dorothy Lohman of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1978; one son, Bruce J. Collum in May 1984; two grandchildren; two sisters, Ida Kruse and Anna Faas; and one brother, Fred Lohman.
