BRUCE COLLUM RITES TODAY

Bruce J. Collum, 59, of 612 High St., Grinnell, died of a heart attack Monday evening, May 7, at the American Legion building.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Harry Linnebrink, pastor of the church, and Rev. Robert Towner, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal church, officiating. Organist was Mary Ellen Brock.

Pallbearers were Chuck Griffith, Arthur H. Grosenbach, Lyle Hudnutt, Gene McCurry, Wayne Simerman and Gerald. R. Schmitz. Honorary bearers were Joe Cox, Larry Criswell, Ray Criswell, Ted Cook, Ray Herbrandt, Frank Kelm and Marion See.

The Scripture Services were conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home.

Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

The son of John and Sophia Lohman Collum, he was born June 21, 1924, at Victor. The family moved to a farm south of Newburg, and he attended school there, graduating from Newburg High School.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Europe. He was married to Irene Leighty in 1946 in Grinnell. Mr. Collum worked as a brick mason for various central Iowa construction companies, and in 1958 he founded the Collum Construction Co. in Grinnell.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion, the Eagles Lodge of Grinnell, and the Izaak Walton League.

In 1977, he was married to Nadine Carver Robinson in Grinnell.

Mr. Collum is survived by his mother, Sophia Collum of Grinnell; his wife, Nadine; his children, Larry Collum of Marshalltown and Shawn, Timothy, David and Lynn Collum and Diane Doyle, all of Grinnell; two stepchildren, Mary Finn and John Robinson, both of Grinnell; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three brothers, Ambrose and Jack, both of Grinnell, and Lawrence of Newton; and one sister, Patricia Kester of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his father and one step-daughter, Grace Finn.
