AN OLD TIME RESIDENT DIES

Mrs. Cynthia Wheelock and Her Husband, Were Early Settlers In Chester.

SHE BELONGED TO WELL KNOWN SHERMAN FAMILY.

Passed Away Saturday at Her Home In Grinnell Aged 87 Years--Funeral Was Held Monday.

Mrs. Cynthia M. Wheelock began life nearly eight-eight years ago in the town of Croydon, N.H., the daughter of William and Mahala Sherman. At thirteen years of age she came west with her parents and four brothers, Jason, Newton, Wilson and Henry Sherman, the family settling first in western Illinois, later living for a few years in Clinton county, Iowa. There in DeWitt she was married in December, 1856, to Harrison T. Wheelock, and a few years later they came to Chester where the Sherman brothers had preceded them; and where they lived until the early 80's, since which time until her death on Saturday morning, July 12, her home has been in Grinnell.

Besides the father and mother the family consisted of Frank S., Willis H., and Mary E. Wheelock, the father having died in 1915 and Willis H. Wheelock in 1921.

Mrs. Wheelock was the last of the sixteen charter members of the Chester Congregational church, organized in 1865, her membership being transferred on removal to Grinnell to the Congregational church here.

Her unquestioning religious faith as consistently exemplified in her life of service and sacrifice, her patience in trying times, her high standards of right and justice, her generous, hospitable nature, her ready recognition of the good in others, her never-failing appreciation of the kindness of friends and particularly in her later years of the devoted care given her by her daughter-in-law, were outstanding characteristics which endeared her to those who knew her best.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock from the home on Main street conducted by Rev. H.L. Wissler. Miss Helen Thomson sang two beautiful solos. Pall bearers were Ralph Sherman, John Alley, I.S. Bailey, George Thomson, Clarence Vogt, and A.C. Herriman. Interment was in Hazelwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sherman of Altoona and Mrs. Wheelock's daughter, Miss Mary Wheelock, of Cleveland, O., were here from out of town to attend the funeral.
