NORMAN O. PILGRIM, LONGTIME RESIDENT, PASSED AWAY FRIDAY

Norman Pilgrim, patriarch of a wellknown and highly respected Grinnell family, passed away Friday in a local hospital.

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Smith funeral home in charge of Rev. W.F. Overhulser. Music was provided by Edward Bohstedt, vocalist, and Mrs. Verl Sammons, pianist, D.M. Reynold acted as flowerbearers and pallbearers were Charles Manly, Croft Pilgrim, Morey Pilgrim, Raymond Pilgrim, John Russell and Will Steenhoek. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Norman Orey Pilgrim, youngest son of Croft and Susanna Swank Pilgrim, was born Sept. 1, 1866, near West Jersey, Stark county, Ill. He passed away at a hospital in Grinnell Saturday, Sept. 9, at 4:45 p.m., aged 83 years and 8 days.

Mr. Pilgrim came to Grinnell with his parents, five brothers and one sister in the spring of 1877. They settled on a farm two miles southeast of Grinnell. Later they purchased a farm a mile south of Grinnell where he resided until his marriage.

On June 27, 1892, he was united in marriage with Carrie Dunlap. Two children were born to this union, Lola Elizabeth, now Mrs. Lola Ahrens, and Glen Edwin, who passed away August 10, 1926. The family lived near Grinnell.

After a short illness Mrs.Pilgrim died May 3, 1908, leaving Mr. Pilgrim alone to care for his children. He soon moved to Grinnell, where he lived with his sister, Mrs. George Eastman, and her husband. Mrs. Eastman was devoted to the children and cared for them as her own.

On Feb. 21, 1912, Mr. Pilgrim was united in marriage with Miss Lola Kirkland, who gave generously of her time and strength to make a happy home for the family.

Mr. Pilgrim is survived by his wife, who resides at their home, 802 East street, and his daughter and two grandsons, Robert and Richard Ahrens.
