MARY CARMICHAEL

--Died, in this city, Sept. 16th, Mrs. Mary Carmichael in the 57th year of her age. She was a native of Philadelphia and her maiden name was Ketchum. She came with her parents in 1852 to Muscatine and there she was married to C.G. Carmichael in 1859 and with him came to Grinnell when the R.I. was finished to this place. Her husband was mayor of Grinnell in 1867-1868 and will be remembered by all as a business man. He died in 1882. The widow continued her residence here for several years with her aged mother and then left to reside at Beatrice with her married daughter Mrs. David Sutherland. With her she returned in June lst to Grinnell after Mr. Sutherland's death in Louisiana. Her two children, Mary and Helen, who married Jas. Rundell were both present at her funeral, also her brother, Mr. W.P. Kethcum with his wife of Chicago, Mr. Rundell and relatives Willis Davis and wife, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Harriman and Lizzie and Edna Davis. The deceased in early life became a christian and united with the Baptist church, and ever maintained her position as a devoted member making herself useful in every good word and work. The funeral was attended by a large circle of friends on the 18th. The services were conducted by her old pastor Rev. T. Brande and Rev. E.M. Vittum and she was buried beside her husband in Hazelwood cemetery.
