The Grinnell (IA) Herald; June 16, 1882

A dispatch was received Monday announcing that Mr. Chas. G. Carmichael had died suddenly of heart disease at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sunday, June 11th. His remains were brought to this place and interred yesterday. Mr. Carmichael came to Grinnell in 1863 and was for many years one of its prominent business men. He was Mayor of the town for two terms, was member and president of the school board for some time, and served one or two terms as county commissioner. He was the builder of the Grinnell elevator and was probably one of the most popular grain buyers the town ever had. He was 49 years old at the time of his death. He had been gone from Grinnell so many years that the later settlers of the place know little of him, except by reputation. Owing to uncertainty as to the time of arrival of his remains but few of his old neighbors were present at the funeral. The uncertainty of telegraph and express lines was again illustrated in this case. W.P. Ketcham, of Marengo, a brother-in-law, happened to be in Cedar Rapids, Wednesday, and saw the remains there. He immediately telegraphed the friends here but the dispatch never came.
