MRS. ETHEL SMITH SERVICES HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Services for Mrs. Ethel L. Smith were conducted by the Rev. Martin Gruneich Sunday afternoon, May 26, at the Steffy Funeral Home. Ben Purdum was soloist accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood, orgnist.

Casket bearers were Ron Camarata, George Bunker, Lex Richardson, Ronald Ackland, Robert DeHoedt and Raymond Schlesselman. Interment was in West Liberty Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, 94, died Friday, May 24, at her home in Montezuma.

The daughter of Sarah and Jacob Carr, she was born March 17, 1874, at Columbus, O.

In her youth she moved with her parents to Searsboro where she attended school.

In January, 1898, she married Emory Beason. To this union seven children were born. They made their home in the Searsboro and Montezuma communities. They homesteaded in the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma and later returned to Iowa by covered wagon.

After the death of Mr. Beason in 1918, she moved to Montezuma.

For several years she worked in various homes helping with the housework.

She was a member of the local Christian Church.

In 1948 she was united in marriage with Zeph Smith. Mr. Smith passed away in 1954 and she maintained her home in Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by five step-children and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Moore.

She is survived by three sons, Noel of Jamesport, Mo., Jack of La Grange, Mo;, Rayford of Oskaloosa; three daughters, Marie Sutphin of Newton, Ella Stanford of Grinnell, Eva Light of Cedar Rapids; three step-children, David Smith, Mary Widener and Dorothy Godwin; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
