DEATH ENDS LONG AND WORTHY LIFE

Mrs. P.E. Chapin, who has made her home in Grinnell for the past thirty years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.E. Gifford in Des Moines, Monday morning, May 5th. The funeral services were held at Anita, Iowa, Tuesday, May 6th and the body was laid to rest beside her husband in the beautiful cemetery at Anita.

Penina Evaline Stire was born at Belvidere, New Jersey, December 4, 1848 and died at Des Moines, Iowa May 5th, 1930, aged 81 years, 5 months and 1 day. At the age of four she and her parents moved to Monmouth, Ill. Later they moved to Durant, Iowa. On November 23, 1869 she was united in marriage to Henry T. Chapin, with whom she lived fifty years lacking three weeks. Mr. Chapin died October 10, 1919. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Chapin purhcased a farm in Cass County, Iowa, near Anita and lived there until 1895. At that time they moved to Phoenix, Ariz. and lived there for five years. In 1900 they movd to Grinnell, Iowa, where their daughter was attending college. Three children were born to them. One son died in infancy; Rollin Henry was accidently killed on a farm near Anita in 1888, and Gertrude Evaline Gifford of Des Moines. They also adopted another boy, Dan *Lourie, whom they raised as their own. Dan died at Los Angeles, Cal. in 1929.

Mrs. Chapin was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church until after her marriage when she joined the Congregational church at Anita.

On removing to Grinnell, Mrs. Chapin united with the Methodist church. She was affiliated with the Rebekah lodge and the Woman's Relief Corps in Grinnell.
