HENRY T. CHAPIN

Henry T. Chapin was born November 23, 1842, at Lafayette, Ohio, and died on October 10, 1919, at his home in Grinnell. He lived on a farm with his parents until his nineteenth birthday, when he enlisted in the 42nd Ohio Regiment, serving three and one-half years. Upon being mustered out of the service he entered the agricultural college at Lansing, Mich. After leaving college he went to Durant, Iowa, where in 1869 he was married to Lina Stire.

To this union three children were born. One died in infancy. Another son, Rollin Harvey, met an accidental death at the age of seventeen. A daughter, Gertrude E., now Mrs. L.E. Gifford of Des Moines, with the faithful wife, survive him. In addition to their own children, Mr. and Mrs. Chapin reared to manhood in their home a boy, Dan M. Lowry, now of Tucson, Arizona.

For more than twenty years the family lived on a farm near Anita, where Mr. Chapin was a successful farmer and stock man. He was one of the leaders in the Congregational church of Anita and was a teacher for many years of the Young People's Bible class. He was a man of positive convictions and outspoken loyalty to his friends, his country and his God. He was faithful to his Grand Army obligations, having been Post Commander of his Post and holding the office of chaplain at the time of his death. He had a wide circle of friends who join the bereaved relatives in mourning his departure from this life.

For six years past he has been in feeble health but has borne the burden of illness and physical weakness with great fortitude. In his home he was vitally interested in all that went on, was keenly sympathetic and constantly inspiring. To know him was to know that his life was hid with Christ in God. The devoted wife and mother alone can estimate the loss sustained in his death.

Funeral services were held on the afternoon of Sunday, October 12, at 4 o'clock at his late residence, conducted by Rev. J.M. Brown, who came from Oskaloosa for that purpose. On Tuesday morning the body was taken for burial to Anita, where services were held in his own home.

CARD OF THANKS.

We wish to thank all the friends who have extended such helpful sympathy during this time of our great bereavement and sorrow.
Mrs. Lina Chapin.
Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Gifford.
