S. AUGUST HJELTE

S. August Hjelte was born in Sweden, April 10, 1830, and died at his home in Chester Center, October 3, 1909. Mr. Hjelte was united in marriage to Anna Katherine Monglinson October 6, 1866. To them was born one daughter, Mrs. Chas. A. Peterson of Grinnell township. He left his native land and came to America in 1880 and first settled near Galesburg, Ill., where he began farming. In 1886 he came to Iowa and settled in Poweshiek county. For the past sixteen years he has lived in Chester Center. For many years he was a sailor, during which time he had visited many parts of the world.

He was a Lutheran in faith and a firm believer in the teachings of the bible. There being no Lutheran church near his home in America he never united with any church in this country, but his faith was ever strong and his hope bright.

Funeral services were conducted at the Chester Congregational church by the pastor, Rev. H.L. Wissler, and the body was laid to rest in the Chester Center cemetery.

He leaves a sorrowing wife and daughter with a host of friends to mourn his loss.
