The Grinnell (IA) Herald; April 1910

MRS. AUGUST HJELTE

Mrs. August Hjelte, whose maiden name was Anna Carrie Maglunsson, was born in Sweden September 13th, 1835. The family came to America in 1887. Since 1895 she has lived at Chester Center, where Mr. Hjelte died October 3, 1909.

The long sickness of her husband told on her physical strength so that she soon found she could not live alone and moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. A. Peterson, of Grinnell township, where she died April 16th, 1910.

Mrs. Hjelte was not so widely known as many of her neighbors on account of never having learned the English language so as to express herself well in that tongue. But to know her, was to know a plain, unassuming Christian character, whose faith in the teachings of God's work was strong and steadfast. It was her delight to read to her husband whose sight had failed, so that for years he could not read, but each Sabbath was spent in the reading of the Bible and sermons written in their native language.

The funeral services were held Monday at the Chester Center church, conducted by H.L. Wissler, and the body laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Chester Center cemetery.
