OBITUARY

Mrs. Susie Chapin Day was the daughter of Mr. Franklin Foote, of Springfield, Mass., and of Mrs. D.B.(Lombard) Foote, who died here some years since. The daughter was born 28th of Sept. 1847, and educated in the schools of Springfield, till her removal with her mother to Grinnell, when she entered Iowa College, leaving the Ladies' Course, junior year, in 1866. Her ancestors on both sides were in old Springfield families; and an aunt survives her, Mrs. Richards, of St. Louis, her mother's sister.

She was married to Mr. Henry H. Day, of Grinnell, March 20th, 1873, and died Sunday, 16 Dec, 1888, at the age of 41, leaving four children, two sons and two daughters.

In her home a good daughter, a good wife and a good mother, devoted in quiet ways to her duty in all these relations, and kind and helpful in all others, her active sympathies were drawn out in usefulness beyond the domestic circle. She was a consistent and exemplary member of the Grinnell Congregational church, with which she united on profession May 16, 1864, under the ministry of Rev. S.D. Cochran, D.D.

She was an esteemed and efficient member of the Woman's Relief Corps, of which she had just been re-elected president, as well as an officer of Beulah Chapter, order of Easern Star. The ladies of these societies as well as the gentlemen of Gorgon Granger post, G.A.R., attended her funeral in a body. To her natural kindness and goodness of heart Christian experience had added deeper and larger sympathies and zeal in doing good, especially to the needy and suffering. She has been taken in the very prime of her usefulness, and when the promise of future growth in usefulness was largest, and she was endearing herself to a widening circle of friends and fellow-laborers.
