FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Services at the Grave Were Conducted by Knights of Pythias.

In the death of Clinton Vanderveer, a member of one of the large and thrifty families who moved to Grinnell in the early days has passed on. He should have been yet almost in the vigor of youth but disease fastened its hand upon him and he yielded to its attack Sunday, May 16, 1926, at the home of his brother in Sedro-Wooley.

Clinton Vanderveer, son of J.B. and Mary A. Vanderveer was born at Carlisle, Ohio, March 30, 1867. At the age of 10 years, he with his parents moved to Grinnell, Iowa.

He was united in marriage with Emma M. Berriman, Nov. 29, 1892. He with his family resided here until three years ago, when he and Mrs. Vanderveer moved to Winterset, Iowa. He had been in failing health for four years, and a year ago a change of climate was advised. He went to the state of Washington where an older brother has resided for many years. After putting up a hard fought battle, and all was done that loving hands could do, he succumbed May 16, 1926. Besides his widow Mrs. Emma Vanderveer, he leaves to mourn his loss, four children, Mrs. H.A. Ross of Winterset, Iowa, F.C. Vanderveer of Grinnell, Earl K. Vanderveer of Creston, Iowa, and Mary Vanderveer of Grinnell. Also, three grandsons, Robert Vanderveer Ross and Keith A. Ross of Winterset and Leonard Maxwell Vanderveer of Grinnell. Two brothers, also survive him, B.D. Vanderveer of Sedro-Wooley, Washington, and J.B. Vanderveer of Grinnell, besides numerous other relatives. His father, mother, and one sister preceded him in death.

The body reached Grinnell accompanied by Mrs. Vanderveer Friday evening and Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock funeral services were held at the home of his son, Chester, 1113 3rd Avenue. Rev. E.M.Vittum, former pastor and friend, spoke feelingly of the life and services of Mr. Vanderveer to his family and to the world. There were two songs by Mrs. D.H. Snook and Mrs. H.J. Eusden. The bearers were old time school boy friends of Mr. Vanderveer at Maple Grove: Norman Pilgrim, Perley Pilgrim, Will Evans, M.S. Smith, B.A. Abel and Irving Bortell.

The services at the grave were in charge of the Knights of Pythias, of which organization he was an active and useful member. The lecture was given by A.M. Burton, W.G. Ray taking the part of prelate.

Mr. Vanderveer was one of the sons of a family of three brothers who came to Grinnell in the earlier days and settled, one in Grinnell, one in Washington township and one in Grinnell township. They were industrious, thrifty and honest. All were recognized as marked men in their locality because of their common honesty, industrious habits and courteous friendship to their neighbors. All of them raised families who have been and are a credit to the communities in which they lived and an honor to the world whom they have served. The deceased man was quiet, conservative, always a gentleman and always one in whom his friends placed great confidence. In his death Grinnell has lost a true and fair minded citizen and his family a worthy husband and father.

Present at the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Ross of Winterset, Earl Vanderveer of Creston, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Vanderveer of Cedar Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Vanderveer of Cedar Falls, Mr. and Mrs. R.U. Vanderveer of Marshalltown.
