CARL D. WITTRUP

Carl D. Wittrup 60, of 1620 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, a member of the Grinnell City Council, died of a heart attack Thursday, Jan. 19, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist will be Sue Martindale, and pianist will be Becky McCarty. Pallbearers will be Richard Ahrens, Jim Bell, Norman Bell, Doyle Burkett, Allen Dean, Harvey Martindale, Roy Rupe and Lennie Smith. Honorary bearers will be Don Ahrens, Glen Bell, Bill Burk, Richard Dean, Eugene Lang, Ron Lang and Lyle Wiley.

Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. A memorial fund in Mr. Wittrup's name is being established, and contributions may be sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell 50112.

He was born on May 31, 1934, in Searsboro. He attended rural school and later attended Grinnell schools.

He was married to Joan Fistler March 14, 1954, in Brooklyn. The couple lived in Grinnell. Mr. Wittrup worked for Miracle Recreation Equipment Co., and in 1961 he founded Carl's Welding and, later, Carl's Crane Service. In 1990 he became associated with Commnet Cellular Co. as a sales representative.

He was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church, the Elks Lodge and the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce. He was serving as a member of the City Council, representing Grinnell's Fourth Ward.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Carla Sayklay of Dallas, Texas, Lisa Smith of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Debra Scates of Dallas; one son, David of Iowa City; his mother, Alice Wittrup of Ely, Minn.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Dean and Ron, both of Ely; and three sisters, Laura Wittrup and Mildred Potter, both of Ely, and Grace Stephenson of Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his father.
