MAX CRAWFORD RITES TUESDAY

Max Crawford, 62, of 423 West St., Grinnell, died of a heart ailment Friday, Jan. 10, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Lawson of the Northside Friends Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and flower bearers were Betty Hannagan, Roberta Oltrogge and Norma Wilson.

Pallbearers were Bilie Bennett, Gene Dayton, Kenneth Dutemple, Floyd Innis, Lyle Truman and Dennis Wilson. Honorary bearers were Doyle Burkett, Paul Curtis, Howard Davis, Keith Davis, Virgil Doud and Lyle Routier.

Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

The son of John and Roxie Anderson Crawford, he was born May 27, 1923, near Centerville. He moved with his family to Grinnell in 1924 and attended schools here.

On July 17, 1940, he was married to Lois A. Lauber at Lancaster, Mo.

Mr. Crawford was employed by the Maytag Co. in Newton for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Grinnell and was also a member of the Eagles Lodge in Grinnell and the Moose Lodge in Newton. He was a former member of the Grinnell Police Department Reserves.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; his children, Ronald E. of San Juan, P.R., Judith Davis of Dallas, Texas, Carolyn Lyons of Des Moines, Beverly Morrison and Max M. Jr., both of Grinnell, and Steven of Dayton; two granddaughters who were raised in the home, Regina Scull of Grinnell and Rhonda Scull, a student in Oklahoma City; 15 grandchidldren; one great-grandson; a sister, Neita Banta of Grinnell; and a brother, Delbert Crawford, also of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Scull, in 1966; two grandchildren; and his parents.
