CHARLES P. VOGEL

Charles P. Vogel, 84, a prominent Grinnell attorney who practiced here for 60 years, died Sunday, April 28, at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony G. Farrell and Steven Witt, deacon, officiating. Music was provided by St. Mary's Church Choir, directed by Karen Town, and organist Pat Shaw.

Pallbearers were Larry, Eric, Mark and Matthew Bettag and Nicholas and Gregory Vogel.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The wake service was conducted Tuesday, also at St. Mary's.

The son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Machino Vogel, he was born July 4, 1906, near Malcom. He graduated from Malcom High School in 1926, attended St. Ambrose College for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa with a law degree in 1931.

He came to Grinnell in 1931 and, with F.W. Tomasek, co-founded the Tomasek and Vogel law firm.

He was married to Frances Ida Devereaux April 27, 1935, in Adair.

Mr. Vogel was a member of the Poweshiek County Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He previously served as Poweshiek County attorney and as city attorney.

Long active in the Democratic Party, he served as county chairman and attended two national conventions. He was a board member emeritus of Grinnell Federal Savings and Loan Association and had served as a board member of Grinnell General Hospital. He was a charter member of the Grinnell Rotary Club and was recognizd as a Rotary fellow. He also was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge No. 1266 and the Grinnell Country Club.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and had served as a church trustee. He was a co-founder of St. Mary's Foundation, a philanthropic organziation; the Knights of Columbus; and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Mr. Vogel is survived by his wife, Frances; two children, Charlene Bettag of St. Charles, Ill., and Judge Richard Vogel of rural Grinnell; nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank of Grinnell and Louis of Riceville.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Lee Vogel; four brothers, Joseph Vogel in infancy, the Rev. Raymond Vogel, Victor Vogel and the Rev. Lawrence Vogel; one sister, Elizabeth Kohrman; and his parents.
