FAYE CARTER

Faye Carter, 83, of Grinnell died Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. Francis Manor, where she had lived since July 1989.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church of Newton, officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and pallbearers were Bruce Blankenfeld, Steve Barnett, John Carter, Jason Conn, Larry Cooper and Mike Cox. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mrs. Carter's name may be made to the Rebekah Lodge and left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The daughter of Harry and Mary J. Davenport, she was born March 15, 1907, in Grinnell. She attended Grinnell schools.

She was married to Charles Herbert Carter July 3, 1926, in Newton. The couple lived in Grinnell where she was employed at Grinnell Glove, DeLong Sportswear and Grinnell College as a switchboard operator.

From 1951 through 1962, the couple operated the West Side Service Center, a small grocery and convenience store on west Sixth Ave., until their retirement.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Pythian Sisters, holding several offices in both organizations. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Lint of Newton, Mary Beyer of Montezuma and Linda Wilburg of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; one son, Jerry of Grinnell; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a great-granddaughter, and a sister, Helen Renaud.
