MR. THOMAS RITES TUESDAY

Charles M. Thomas, 84, of rural Malcom died Saturday, July 12, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lawrence P. Fitzpatrick of the Malcom United Methodist Church officiating. Organist will be Linda Schneekloth, and vocalist will be the Rev. Roy Thompson. Pallbearers will be Curt Brown, Gary Leadmon, Scott Sadler, John See, Wayne See and Jerry Thomas.

Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Charles Frank and Rosetta Seeway Thomas, he was born March 12, 1896, near Rock Island, Ill. He moved with his family to the Grinnell area and attended Grinnell High School.

On March 12, 1917, he was married to Flonnie Thompson in Newton. The couple farmed in the Bethel area in Rock Creek Township, Jasper County. Mr. Thomas operated a threshing run in the Rock Creek and Sheridan communities. Following harvest season, he operated a saw mill and sorghum mill. He and his wife had lived south of Malcom for 37 years. Mr. Thomas was also an independent trucker and ran a grain and livestock operation.

Survivors include his wife, Flonnie; his children, Lawrence R. Thomas of Montezuma, Mrs. Louise See of Des Moines, Mrs. Lillian Leadmon of Newton, Cleo B. Thomas of Malcom and Dorothy Thomas of Des Moines; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Mrs. Addie Engels of Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Glen E. Thomas, who was killed in action during World War II; two infant children, Irene and Donald; five brothers, Merton, Walter, John, Frank and Phillip Thomas; and four sisters, Blanch Hutter, Maude Garrett, Clara Selle and Bernice Hindman.
