Visitation: 12:00 p.m. untl 7:00 p.m., with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 14, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell

Interment: following the service on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell

Memorials: Doris J. Thorson Memorial Fund, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112, to benefit organizations of the family's choice.

Doris was born the oldest of twelve children to Andrew Burton and Mae (Anderson) Paul on December 30, 1922 in Kellogg, Iowa. She graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1940. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College, now the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Following her education, she taught at Rock Creek, Mariposa and McCord country schools, Emerson Hough Elementary School in Newton, and Davis Elementary School in Grinnell.

Doris was united in marriage to Ernest Iver Thorson on August 1, 1953 at the United Methodist Church in Newton, Iowa. To this union were born three children, Dorene, Dean, and Richard. The couple resided and farmed near Grinnell and Doris was a homemaker. Doris' family, friends and her faith were most important to her. She was active in 4H and the family attended the Iowa State Fair every year. Her enjoyments included sewing, cross stitching, and tending to her garden.

Doris is survived by her children, Dorene Thorson of Altoona, IA, Dean (Mary Jo) Thorson of Grayslake, IL, and Richard Thorson of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Natalie, and Noah; siblings, Norman (Vivian) Paul of Hood River, OR, Helen (Earnest) Hoffa of Grundy Center, IA, Carol (William) Skoog of Altoona, IA, Dale Paul of Portland, OR, Dennis (Sharon) Paul of Greeley, CO, James (Margaret) Paul of Newton, IA, Curtis (Lee) Paul of Swaledale, IA, and Keith (Dotty) Paul of Fenton, MO. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest in 1994; her siblings, Eugene, who died in infnacy, Phyllis, and Wayne.
