LEROY E. SMITH

Leroy E. Smith, 72, of Grinnell died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial service was held Monday, June 1, 2009, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Memorials may be made to the Leroy E. He was born, the son of Amos and Mable Jones Smith, on Dec. 7, 1936, in Grinnell where he was raised and educated. He was united in marriage with Alice Roof on Aug. 9, 1958, at Grinnell Christian Church. He was a life-long resident of Grinnell and a mechanic at local car dealerships and auto body shops. He also worked at O'Reilly Auto Parts, Cunningham Drug and drove for Miracle Recreation.

Leroy was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club and a former member and officer of the Grinnell Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alice Smith of Grinnell; his daughters Nancy Van Wyk and Diane Emmert of Grinnell; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brothers, Tom Smith of Brennam, Texas and Rick Smith of Grinnell, and his sisters, Karen Rupe and Pam Willemsen of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenny Smith.
