AMOS SMITH RITES TODAY
Amos D. Smith, 64, of Oronogo, Mo., formerly of Grinnell, died Thursday at Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Grinnell First United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Donald M. Scheller, pastor of the Gilman United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Mrs. John Wedlock. Pallbearers will be Doug Hoffstetter, Warren Miller, Paul Peck, James Robison, Don Sowerwine and Don Starnes. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Breckinridge, Charles Cowman, James Graham, Floyd Innis, Harlan Moore, and Donald Roof.
Burial will be at Hazelwood cemetery with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The son of Samuel Thomas and Cora Emma Kibbee Smith, he was born Dec. 25, 1913, at Brooklyn. He attended Brooklyn High School. On Sept. 17, 1935, he was married to Mabel Mae Jones at Grinnell. Mr. Smith worked for the Maytag Company in the maintenance department for 30 years, retiring in 1976. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for two years. Mrs. Smith preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 1970.
On July 17, 1973, he was married to Mary Gulosh Weiland at Richland. They made their home in Grinnell until last year when they moved to Oronogo.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Leroy Smith, Mrs. John (Karen) Rupe, Tommy Smith, Kenny Smith and Richard Smith, all of Grinnell, and Pamela Smith of Lynnville; three step-daughters, Mrs. Shirley Tremmel of Gilman, Mrs. Norma Harvey of Fairfield, and Mrs. Catherine Provin of Grinnell; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Cleo Smith of Grinnell and Floyd Smith of Burlington; and a sister, Lucille Pimlott of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and a sister, Eloida Smith.
