BERTHA WERTZ

Bertha Irene Wertz, 82, of Iowa City, formerly of Grinnell, died Saturday, Jan. 2, at Greenwood Manor in Iowa City.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Briggs, pastor of the Grinnell First Friends Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Norman Bach, Van Davis Jr., Raymond Mitchell, Kenneth Saunders, Bill Yocum and Jeff Yocum. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Clyde and Tillie VanGorp Mitchell, she was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Sully. She moved with her family to Gilman where she attended school.

She was married to Elmer F. Wertz, and they lived in the Kellogg, Newburg and Gilman areas. They were later divorced, and Mrs. Wertz moved to Oskaloosa and later to Grinnell. While living here she worked for Grinnell College.

She moved to Iowa City in 1962 and worked in the food service department at the University of Iowa. She had been a resident of Greenwood Manor since 1975.

Surviving are a son, Phillip of Grinnell; a brother, David Mitchell of Grinnell; one granddaughter and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Cornie Mitchell.
