ESTHER L. WERTZ
Esther L. Wertz, 85, of 100 Delores Drive, Gilman, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held Friday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Goshon, pastor of Strand Lutheran Church in Dunbar, officiating. Organist will be Carol Plum Freese. Interment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Garden in Marshalltown. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 12 noon on Thursday and the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Strand Lutheran Church in Dunbar and sent to Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell.
She was born Nov. 15, 1917, on the family farm near LeGrand to Herman and Mabel Barke Thompson. She attended rural schools and graduated from Dunbar High School with the class of 1936. She also attended Marshalltown Business College, then worked at the Dunham Foundry in Marshalltown and Walker Grocery Store in Gilman.
She was married on March 8, 1958, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua to Elmer F. Wertz. The couple lived in Gilman where she was a homemaker and a member of the Gilman City Council.
She was a member of Strand Lutheran Church in Dunbar.
She is survived by one son, Phillip Wertz of Grinnell; one granddaughter, one great grandson and two sisters, Betty Stull of Waverly and Mildred Stonewall of Gilman. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
