KELLOGG COUNCILMAN SHOOTS WIFE, SELF
A 26-year-old Kellogg woman remains in serious condition with bullet wounds in the right side of her chest and in both arms, following a shooting incident during which her husband committed suicide Wednesday.
The incident took place over the noon hour at the Maytag Co. plant in Newton.
Dead is (Ronald) Wayne Carver, 26, a supervisor for Maytag and a Kellogg town councilman. His wife, Connie Lee was treated at a Newton hospital before being transferred to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Both Mr. and Mrs. Carver were employed by Maytag.
According to witnesses, Carver arrived on the sixth floor of a manufacturing area in Maytag's Plant No. 1 over the noon hour. He and his wife had an argument, and as the woman began to walk away, Carver grabbed her by the arm. She then broke away and began to run, and Carver fired three shots. Two of the shots hit her in the upper arms, while the other struck her in the chest.
After shooting his wife, witnesses said, Carver put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. He was dead when Newton police arrived at 1 p.m.
AT OTHER PLANT
Carver was said to have worked at Maytag's Plant No. 2 in the north part of Newton. Plant No. 1, where his wife worked, is located in the soutwest part of the city.
According to Newton police, employees of Maytag told them that Mrs. Carver had recently begun divorce action against her husband.
The Carvers moved to Kellogg from Newton two years ago. Carver was appointed to the Kellogg Town Council in 1969 and won the seat again in a regular election during the fall of last year.
He was born on July 28, 1944, and attended the Deep River schools. An Air Force veteran, he served for one year in Vietnam.
Mr. and Mrs. Carver were married on Nov. 13, 1962. The couple had two children -- Jeffrey, 7, and Christie, 3 -- both of whom survive.
SURVIVORS
He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Carver of Oskaloosa; three sisters, Mrs. Harlan McCulley of Brooklyn, Mrs. Robert Brennan and Mrs. Richard Icenbice of Deep River; one half-brother, Ted Kudart of Montezuma; and his wife Connie.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River, with the Rev. Eugene E. Stohs officiating.
