LYLE SULLENS IS KILLED

Popular Young Man Meets Instant Death Sunday p.m. When Motorcycle Collides with Car

AT THREE MILE CORNER WEST OF GRINNELL

Funeral Services Will Be Held From M.E. Church Wednesday Afternoon at 3:30 O'clock

A real tragedy was enacted three miles west of Grinnell on No. 6 at what is known as the three mile corner, Sunday afternoon, about 4:45 o'clock, when Lyle Sullens was instantly killed in a collision between the motorcycle which he was riding and a car driven by Fred E. Goode of Newton, who had with him his wife and his mother, Mrs. A.J. Goode.

Lyle was traveling east on the motorcycle and apparently, in turning the corner, swung too wide and was unable to get out of the way of the car, which was descending the hill. Car and motorcycle met head on a short distance up the hill with such force that Lyle was thrown into the ditch north of the road. He was instantly killed. The motorcycle was badly crushed and crashed its way into the front of the Goode car, so that it was hard to extricate it. The motorcycle was dragged about sixty feet from the spot of the collision.

Lyle was a young man, popular, full of life and vigor, and apparently with a long and useful life before him. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sullens, for many years respected residents of this community. The Sullens home is on No. 6, about two miles west from the scene of the tragedy. Lyle was married only last August 1, to Helen Lunt, a Grinnell girl, who had been employed for some years in the office of the Grinnell Register. The Herald learned to know her and to have a high regard for her. They made their home in Des Moines, where Lyle was employed as driver of a milk truck for the Northland Dairy, and where he had fitted up an apartment for his bride.

Mr. and Mrs. Sullens came down to spend Sunday with Lyle's parents and with Mrs. Sullens' grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Eichhorn. At the time of the accident Mrs. Sullens was at the Eichhorn home and Lyle had borrowed his brother's motorcycle for a ride and was apparently on his way to Grinnell to join his wife. It was a sad interruption to a married life started so happily only a few short weeks ago.

Lyle was 22 years old. He had graduated from Grinnell high school in 1931 and starred at a halfback position on the high school football team. Besides his wife and parents he is survived by four brothers, Marion, Edward, Harlan and Laird and one sister, Mrs. Howe Robison of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the Methodist church conducted by Rev. W.J. Todd of Ottumwa, former pastor in Grinnell and now superintendent for this district.
