LESLIE WERTZ

Leslie Wertz, 93, formerly of rural Kellogg, died of heart failure Monday, Dec. 30, at Newton Health Care Center.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Mike Johnson, pastor of the Kellogg Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in Our Silent City Cemetery, Kellogg.

The son of George and Anna Bell Wertz, he was born Jan. 8, 1903, in Jasper County. He attended Newburg schools.

He was married to Muriel Sparks March 17, 1928, in Newton.

Mr. Wertz, a farmer, was a lifelong resident of the Kellogg area. He was a member of the Hickory Grove Church and the Kellogg Historical Society. He was a charter member of the Kellogg Museum.

Surviving are two sons, Darrell of Kellogg and Wayne of Newton; one daughter, June Buckley of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lyle of Marshalltown; and four sisters, Doris Yoakum of Alabama, Mildred Phillips of Grinnell, Rosie Bickel of Coggon and Viola Koger of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Marlene; one granddaughter; a sister, Elsie; and a brother, Elmer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hickory Grove Church, the Kellogg Historical Society or the Kellogg Christian Church.
