FORREST DOTY

Forrest Doty, 91, of Grinnell died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 23, at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner and vocalist was Barbara Chitwood. Casket bearers were Daniel, Daryl, Doug and Merle Doty, and Paul and Robert Van Ersvelde. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made either to the United Methodist Church in Brooklyn or the United Methodist Church in Grinnell.

He was born June 12, 1912, in Brooklyn to Forrest and Nola Tinker Doty. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools, graduating in 1930 from Brooklyn High School. On March 18, 1937, he was married to Frances E. Richman at her parents' home in Brooklyn. The couple farmed in Bear Creek Township and Madison Township before moving to a farm near Malcom in 1949 which they operated until they retired in 1974. Following retirement, they resided in Brooklyn until moving to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1997.

During their retirement years, the Dotys traveled including trips to Australia, Alaska and Europe. They took numerous pictures of their travels which they shared in slide shows with many organizations and friends. They also spent the winter months in Texas for 21 years. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, a former member of the Brooklyn United Methodist Church and Brooklyn Kiwanis Club. He also was a former member of the Malcom board of education and a 50-year member of the Farm Bureau. He was named a "Master Swine Producer" by Wallace's Farmer magazine and was awarded the top Soil Conservationist Award in his Iowa district.

He is survived by one son Floyd Doty, rural Brooklyn; three grandsons, six great grandchildren and one sister Lois Van Ersvelde of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two brothers, Melvin and Rolland Doty.
