MELVIN A. DOTY

Funeral services were held Friday, June 2, at the Grinnell Christian Church for Melvin A. Doty, 85, of Grinnell, who died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

The Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the church, the Rev. Dennis Smith, pastor of the Madison Church of Christ, and Dan Toney, campus minister at the University of Iowa, officiated. Music was provided by Jolene Jones, organist, Lorna Lang, pianist, and Barbara Chitwood and Kristine Hanson, vocalists.

Casket bearers were his grandchildren, David, Daniel and Angela Toney, Matthew, Mark, Michael, Susan, Kristine, Erin and Nathan Doty, and Scott Hinkle. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Mr. Doty was born on Feb. 24, 1915, on the family farm near Brooklyn to Forrest and Nola Tinker Doty. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1932. Following his education, he farmed with his father.

On May 24, 1939, he was married to Anna Louise Larsen at the home of the Rev. W.B. Wilson in Grinnell. Mr. and Mrs. Doty farmed in Bear Creek Township near Brooklyn and he semi-retired from farming and moved to Brooklyn in 1971.

While living in Brooklyn, he worked as a bus driver for the BGM School District. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1985 and they have resided at Seeland Park in Grinnell since January of 1998.

He was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church and had formerly served as an elder and treasurer for the Madison Church of Christ. He also had served on the board of directors for the Brooklyn School District, the Malcom Farmer's Co-op Elevator, the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau and the Poweshiek-Jasper Farm Service.

He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's school events and farm-related activities.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Rolland Doty, and two sisters, Martha and Irene Doty.

Survivors include his wife, A. Louise Larsen of Grinnell; one daughter, Marlene Toney of Grinnell; two sons, Merle Doty of Grinnell and Eugene Doty of Mansfield, Texas; one brother, Forrest Doty Jr. of Grinnell; and one sister, Lois Van Ersvelde of Brooklyn; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell was in charge of arrangements.
