Farm Woman Found Shot Sunday Morn

Mrs. Clarence Gallup Found Dead With Shotgun Near Body:  Investigate

A hint of mystery continues to shroud the death of Mrs. Clarence (Stella) Gallup, 54, of near Grinnell, whose body was discovered in an outbuilding at her rural home with a .410 shotgun lying nearby.

Sheriff William Welsh said he was summoned to the Gallup farm north of the Trinity Lutheran church early yesterday morning.  Due to the nature of the death, Welsh said, he immediately summoned Coroner Rex Bramer, a Grinnell doctor, and agents of the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

After a day-long investigation, Welsh said it was still not determined whether Mrs. Gallup's death was by accident or if it was self-inflicted.  He said the investigation was continuing.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm., Tuesday, from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home with the Rev. L. H. Streich, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, officiating.  Music will be furnished by Ross Wyss, accompanied by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner at the organ.

Serving on the flower committee will be Mrs. Virgil Broders and Mrs. Oscar Olson.  Pallbearers will be Harold Rehberg, Marion Rehberg, Robert Timm, Gene Gilbert, Horace Davidson and Raymond Palmer.  Interment will be in Ivy Hill cemetery at Malcom.

The daughter of Frederick E. and Johanna Hanssen Rehberg, she was born on Nov. 6th, 1905, in Poweshiek county.  She lived in this area her entire life and attended schools here.

On Sept. 3rd, 1949, she was united in marriage with Clarence E. Gallup at Newton.

Mrs. Gallup is survived by her husband; her mother, Mrs. Johanna Rehberg of Grinnell; one sister, Mrs. Fred (Nonie) Timm of Grinnell; and one brother, Harry Rehberg of Grinnell.

He father preceded her in death.
