LAST SERVICES FOR FRANK MATTESON ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON

Frank E. Matteson, who passed away at his farm home March 18, was born of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Matteson, on a farm three miles southwest of Grinnell November 25, 1865. He was in his seventy-third year.

The Mattesons came from New York state and settled on a prairie homestead before the beginning of the town of Grinnell, first living in a log cabin. Frank was a younger one of a family of 11 children and lived all his life in the vicinity of Grinnell.

On Oct. 8, 1891, he was married to Miss Alta Adkins. At that time he was farming the present W.A. Adams place, but on the following March, he moved onto the present farm southwest of Grinnell, where he has lived continuously for 47 years.

In 1903 the wife was killed by a runaway team, but Mr. Matteson kept the family together and in later years the home has been cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Hazel Pearce and her husband, who have made their home with him.

Besides Mrs. Pearce he is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Mina Crowder of Grinnell, three grand children, Mary Pearce and Norma and Reba Crowder, and one sister, Mrs. George Woodard of Long Beach, California.

Mr. Matteson was active in the life of his community. He assisted in all its worthy enterprises and shared its responsibilites. For 12 years he was assessor for Rock Creek township. He was a charter member of Loyal Grange, and was an early promoter of the Farm Bureau in the township.

For many years he attended the Rock Creek Baptist church, and helped in carrying on its work. He was deeply devoted to his home, and in quiet, friendly way exercised a wholesome influence on his friends and neighbors who will greatly miss his genial presence.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. W.B. Wilson were held at the home at two o'clock Tuesday, with burial in Rock Creek cemetery. The pall bearers were Dr. L.M. Adkins, Burt Speth, Fred Adkins, Aut Elliott, Judson Blakely and George Decatur. The music was furnished by Bernard Bailey and Donald Huff who sang two duets, accompanied by Miss Lois Huff.
