RITES HELD FOR HAZEL CARTER

Hazel M. Carter, 84, of 90 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, died Saturday morning at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson of the Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Otis and Margaret Hardy Earp, she was born Feb. 5, 1901, at Booneville. She attended rural schools and later graduated from Van Meter High School.

She was married to Herbert W. Kelly on March 7, 1918, in Des Moines. She worked at Younkers Cafeteria and at the Cozy Cafe in West Des Moines.

Following her divorce, she came to Grinnell in 1947. She worked at the former Model Lunch restaurant for 16 years.

On Jan. 14, 1951, she was married to Howard D. Carter in Grinnell. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary here.

Survivors include one son, Raymond H. Kelly of Thayer; one stepdaughter, Ida Starnes of Grinnell; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Earp of Des Moines and Harold Earp of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Howard; her parents; one son, Vernon; one daughter, Lois McNurlen; one granddaughter; two brothers, LeRoy and Everett Earp; and one sister, Fannie Bell.
