RITES TODAY FOR MR. CARTER

Howard D. Carter, 83, of 906 Pearl St., Grinnell, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith East Side Funeral Home, with the Rev. James P. Russell, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be Marion Gibson, Don Lewis, Jim McNally, Jim Miller, Bill Noel, and Ed Richardson. Graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit, with burial at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of James and Ida Wilson Carter, he was born July 14, 1894, at Lewis, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Army and served in France during World War I.

Following his discharge from the Army, he moved to Des Moines where he was married to Frances Rhoades Phillips in 1919. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved to Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Carter died in 1942, and Mr. Carter moved to Grinnell.

He was employed here by Claire's Cleaners and later owned and operated Howard's Tailor Shop in downtown Grinnell.

He was married to Hazel Earp Kelly on Jan. 14, 1951, at the Methodist parsonage in Grinnell. He was a member of the Focht-Tennant American Legion Post here.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Ida) Starnes of Grinnell; one step-son, Don Phillips of Grinnell; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Fred Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Frances.
