RALPH RAY ANTHONY

Ralph Ray Anthony, 97, formerly of Rte. 2, Brookyn, died Sunday, Sept. 20, at Brookhaven Nursing Home where he had lived since December 1985.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Sheridan United Methodist Church in rural Malcom, with the Rev. Melinda Cree officiating. Burial was in Sheridan Cemetery, with the Nevenhoven Funeral Home of Brooklyn in charge of arrangements.

He was born in rural Tama Aug. 5, 1895, the son of Lincoln and Ada Vandeveer Anthony. He received his education in the Sheridan rural school.

On Feb. 14, 1917, he was married to Helen Wheeler in Grinnell. They had lived in the Brookyn area since 1930.

Mr. Anthony operated Anthony Garage in Brooklyn where he sold Studebaker cars and repaired Allis Chalmers farm machinery. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony moved to a farm north of Brooklyn in 1949.

He was a member of the Sheridan United Methodist church and, for many years, the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel of Wisner, Neb., and Roger of Dale City, Va.; four daughters, Virginia Barton of Highland, Calif., Marjorie Sparrgrove of Traer, Barbara Rosburg of Cedaredge, Colo., and Jane Arnold of Mechanicsville; two brothers, David of Grinnell and Leslie of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mary Kenner of Chelsea; 29 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sons, Donald, Tom and Warren; one brother, Emery; and three sisters, Myrtle Cloyd, Laura Johnson and Hazel Saunders.
