JAMES MCMEEKIN RITES HELD IN GRINNELL

James McMeekin, 93, of Grinnell, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 26, at the Grinnell hospital.

He was born Nov. 20, 1875, on the family farm near Montezuma, the son of Robert and Mary Jane Ewart McMeekin. He attended the Pleasant No. 9 school. On Feb. 8, 1899, he was united in marriage with Liddie Belle Playle. To this marriage were born four children, three of whom survive: Mrs. Edith Maude Lemke, Mrs. Mary Sheeler and Robert J. McMeekin, all of Grinnell. In addition to this union, Mr. McMeekin is survived by 11 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and one sister: William John McMeekin of Montezuma; Rev. Frank McMeekin of Canby, Ore.; and Mrs. Sadie Johnson of Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Belle, on Feb. 28, 1956; and an infant daughter. He was also preceded in death by one brother and three sisters: Henry; Elizabeth McGimpsey, Janie Wilson and Alma Benton.

He had farmed in the Ewart and Montezuma area except for a time when he lived in Minnesota. In 1942, he and his wife retired and moved to Grinnell. He was the oldest member of the Grinnell United Presbyterian church.

Funeral services for James McMeekin were held 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, at the Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, with the Rev. Ronald Rain, pastor of the Grinnell United Presbyterian church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Eugene Holley. Pallbearers were Calvin Lemke, Earl Lemke, Leonard Lemke, Marvin Lemke, Ralph Lemke and Walter Lemke. Burial was in Pleasant Township cemetery at Ewart.
