CLIFFORD ROBERT SOUTER

Clifford Robert Souter, son of Robert Henry Souter and Olivia Belle Latcham Souter died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1986, in the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 78.

Clifford was born on the family farm south of Ewart, Sept. 12, 1908. Later moving to the Tyson Farm southeast of Grinnell, then moving back to Montezuma, Clifford attended Pleasant Township No. 8 School and his freshman year at Grinnell High School. He attended Sunday School and Church at the Ewart Methodist church and was a member of the Farm Bureau. He served for three years in the Panama Canal Zone as a guard in the U.S. Air Force, receiving the Good Conduct medal, Four Overseas Bars, and a Carbine Sharp Shooter Award. He was given an Honorable Discharge Oct. 13, 1945 as a corporal.

He worked most of his life on the family farm. After the farm was sold he moved to rural Searsboro to make his home. Clifford loved to hunt, fish, trap and play ball. He built a baseball diamond on the Souter Farm for the Ewart Baseball Team.

He is survived by three brothers: Leonard of Brooklyn, Donald of Grinnell and Robert of Montezuma; three nieces, a nephew and grand nieces and grand nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant sister, and a brother.

Services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. George Salnave, pastor of the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, officiated. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Allen Latcham, Leonard Latcham, Gale Latcham, Lyle Latcham, Alvin Sielaff and Sam Sielaff.

Honorary bearers were Cecil Agnew, Clifford Gerard, Kenneth Gregson, Willard Gregson, Booker Kiner, Ernest McFerran, Ernest Opdahl and Don Kendal. Burial was in the Masonic Odd Fellows Cemetery at Montezuma.
