ROBERT C. SOUTER, 87

Robert C. Souter, 87, of Montezuma, died on Sunday, June 4, 2006 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, with the Rev. George Salnave, pastor of the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, is in charge of the arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The family will be present at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be Allen Latcham, Gail Latcham, Lyle Latcham, Chad Legg, Jeremy Souter and Bob Wilkins.

Honorary bearers will be Larry and Jeanie Steele, Eugene Mann, John Henry, Gene Morgan and Gene Story.

Robert was born on May 6, 1918 near Ewart, to Robert and Olivia Latcham Souter. He was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 1936.

On Oct. 15, 1941 he was married to Mary Jean Wells at the Methodist parsonage in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for the DeKalb Seed Corn Company and he later farmed near Malcom and Brooklyn. They later operated a dairy farm near Guernsey for 27 years and moved to Montezuma in 1982.

Robert was a 50-year member of the Farm Bureau and a past member of the Willing Workers Club. He enjoyed fishing, walking around Diamond Lake and raising his livestock. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by two grandsons, Jeremy R. Souter of White House, Texas and Chad L. Legg of Conrad; three grandchildren, Chance, Carson and Emma Faye Souter; and one brother, Donald Souter, of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jean; one daughter, Barbara J. Legg; and three brothers, Clifford, Leonard and Carl Souter.
