PIONEER LAID TO REST
John English Died Near Searsboro After Long Residence in County.
John English, who had spent seventy-one years in Poweshiek county died near Searsboro Tuesday of last week. He came to Poweshiek county in 1846 when but ten years of age. His father located on a farm in Sugar Creek township, where the family made their home.
The deceased was born in Marion county, Ohio in 1835 and was 81 years, 10 months and 25 days old at the time of death. His father, William English, was Poweshiek county's first sheriff. In 1854 the deceased was united in marriage with Mary Ellen Stanley, who, with two sons and four daughters, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Burbank and Mrs. Stewart (twins), of New Sharon, survive, also twelve grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One daughter and one son, Percy, reside in Searsboro. Another son, William, and three daughters reside at Salem, Oregon.
The funeral services were held Thursday at the late home, conducted by a life-long friend, W.E. Stilwell, and the remains were laid to rest in the Searsboro cemetery.
A half century ago Mr. English joined a party of emigrants and went overland to Oregon. One of the party, named Miller, met death in the Platte river. Mr. English made the return trip alone on a pony. He was a mangnificent example of the pioneer, sturdy, honest and ever faithful to his family and friends.
