MRS. AMOS H. GILBERT
Mrs. Minnie E. Gilbert, daughter of Samuel and Mary McLain, was born at Newtonards, Ireland, Jan. 10, 1885, and passed away in Grinnell July 8, 1948, at the age of 63 years, 5 months, and 28 days, after a lingering illness of two years.
She came with her parents from Ireland when she was only 14 months of age. The family lived near Brooklyn, until her father began mason work in Grinnell. She attended the Grinnell schools, and when a young woman she worked at the Grinnell Herald office.
On December 30, 1903, she was married to Amos H. Gilbert. To this union six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The other five who survive her are Ray Gilbert of Denver, Colo., Mrs. H.S. Talbert of Searsboro, Lloyd Gilbert of Grinnell, Harry Gilbert of Newton, and Lucille, still at home, and who has cared for her mother during her long illness, which was borne without impatience or complaint.
Besides those mentioned she is survived by her husband and 15 grandchildren in whom she was greatly interested, and always happy when they could be with her, three brothers, Harvey and Harold McLain of Rock Island, Ill., and Jesse McLain of Los Angeles, Calif., two sisters, Isabelle Deford of Bay City, Michigan and Dorothy Boyle of Dearborn, Mich., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, and two brothers, Henry of Indiana, and Earl of Grinnell.
Mrs. Gilbert will be sorely missed, not only by those who were akin to her, but by all who came under the influence of her gracious life.
