Samuel McLean passed away Wednesday morning at the Shell Coop home about four miles southeast of Grinnell, following a long illness. Mr. McLean has lived in this vicinity for a long time and was well know here. Following is the obituary.

Samuel McLean was born in County Down, Ireland, on March 18, 1841 and departed this life June 17, 1924, aged 83 years, 3 months, and 17 days. On the 18th day of July 1859 he was united in marriage to Mary Jackson. To this union were born twelve children, eight boys and four girls. Three of the children departed this life some years ago and Mrs. McLean, twelve years ago. He has lived alone until the beginning of his illness.

Mr. and Mrs. McLean came to America in 1884 and settled in Poweshiek County, where they have made their home ever since. They lived on a farm nine miles southeast of Grinnell until 18 years ago, when they moved to Grinnell.

Mr. McLean has been suffering since October. In December he had a stroke and his suffering was very hard for eight months. Yet he bore it bravely and in patience, always showing his appreciation of the care and kindness of his loved ones.

He was an honest and upright man, always loyal, and the kind of a man who is deeply loved and whose place cannot be filled.

Mr. McLean grew to manhood in Ireland, gladly taking his part in his work and responsibilies. He attended school and Sunday school, teaching a class in the Episcopal Sunday School for two years. He was a member of the Episcopal church at that place.

He is mourned by his nine children, 34 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren and many friends.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Shell Coop, conducted by Rev. W.W. Woodburn of the Prebyterian Church. Interment was made at Hazelwood.
