WILLIAM J. HAINES SR.

William J. Haines Sr., 75, of 95 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, died of cancer Monday, June 12, at his home.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church, officiating. Casked bearers were his children. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born April 3, 1925, near Brooklyn to Andrew Jackson and Pearl May Otto Haines. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school.

In 1946, he was married to Luvica Belcher in Grinnell. They lived in the Grinnell area, and Mr. Haines was a foreman for the former Gulf Fertilizer Co. of Grinnell. He also worked for Miracle Recreation Equipment Co. prior to his retirement in 1979.

Surviving are four sons, William Jr. and Jimmy, both of Grinnell, Gerald of Kansas City, Mo., and Chet of Orongo, Mo.; three daughters, Pearl K. Saurer of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Luvica Erwin of Tama and Rosie A. Duncan of Grinnell; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond of Gilman; and two sisters, Fern Freeborn and Betty Kelm, both of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Wanda D. Haines; one grandson; three brothers, Wallace, Ralph and John; and three sisters, Zella Delk, Hazel Haines and Catherine Akers.
