BERT O. STEMSRUD, 84

Bert O. Stemsrud, 84, died November 8, 1995 at Des Moines General Hospital.

Funeral services were held November 11, 1995 at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa. Rev. Glenn Hulsebus officiated the services. Mrs. Alice Renaud was organist and Mr. Milton Severe was vocalist with music selections of "Amazing Grace," "Please Release Me," "Edelweiss" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Casket bearers were Roger Iverson, Richard Lowry, Merland Pfantz, Phil Reams, Harold Schoen and Bill Vann. Fraternal Rites were given by the Hermon Masonic Lodge on Friday, November 10 at Smith Funeral Home. Burial was in Pleasant Township Cemetery, Ewart, Iowa.

Bert, the son of Berger and Olia Mabel Christianson Stemsrud, was born on April 15, 1911, near Rock Valley, Iowa. He moved to Poweshiek Coutny with his parents as a young boy. He attended rural school and later assisted his father with farming in the Newburg and Kellogg communities. On June 1, 1941, he was married to Margaret Arthur, and the couple lived and farmed near Ewart.

Bert was a member of the Hermon Masonic Lodge in Grinnell for over fifty years and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge of Grinnell for over forty-six years. He was also a member of the Ewart United Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bob Stemsrud; two brothers; and one sister.

Bert is survived by his wife, Margaret; three daughters: Billie Rimrodt of Arlington, Texas; Judith D'Amico, Portland, Maine; and Linda Vogt, Fayette, Mo.; seven grandchildren; three sisters: Mildred Black and Bernice Capasso, both of Grinnell, and Nell Shimer of Brownsville, Wis.; and one brother, Clinton Stemsrud of Webster City, Iowa.
